The Women of Providence in Collaboration offer two reflections for the first week of Lent. Sister Carol Stenger, CDP, asks if we are willing to grow into one with all of creation. Her reflection can be read here.
Sister Nancy Nolan, a Sister of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, writes, “Understanding that ‘we see from where we stand’ I realize that depending on where we live and with whom we minister each of us will face the world’s injustices from a different perspective. And each of us is called to respond using our particular gift and creative abilities.” Click here to read her reflection in its entirety.

The monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament (consecrated host) sits on the altar of the Church of the Immaculate Conception after Mass on Sunday, Feb. 14. This began a 40-hour devotion in preparation for the Church season of Lent, which began with Ash Wednesday this week.
This monstrance usually resides in the beautiful Blessed Sacrament Chapel.

Two reflections will be added each week during Lent with one being posted each day of the Triduum. The first reflection, posted on Ash Wednesday, was written by Sister Jan Craven and is titled “Providence is promise through resurrection.”

Sisters of Providence respond to Oprah
The Sisters of Providence have issued a response to the Oprah Winfrey television program broadcast on Feb. 9, featuring the Dominican Sisters of Mary of Ann Arbor, Mich. The story focused on today's women who choose to have a life in a religious congregation. The letter has been sent to the Oprah Winfrey staff.
While the Dominican Sisters of Mary of Ann Arbor have a wonderful message to share, the Sisters of Providence feel the story of religious life as it was portrayed on Oprah is incomplete.
The story opened with Oprah stating that the show "called convents all across the country to see if they would let our cameras in. Most of them told us, 'no way.' One of them even asked, 'What is an Oprah Winfrey?'"
We think it's important to state that the Sisters of Providence have repeatedly invited Oprah and her show to the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods motherhouse with no response. The letter explains more.
Just so you know — we welcome visitors! When our gates are open (which is pretty much all of the time, except when we sleep), the public is welcome to visit our chapels, the Shrine of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin, our alpacas, the organic gardens, the Way of the Cross, the Gift Shop at Providence Center and everything we have to offer. Members of the media may contact Dave Cox, media relations manager, at 812-535-2810 or by e-mail at media@spsmw.org for exclusive tours and to arrange interviews.
You can read the Sisters of Providence response on our Web site here.

Snow, full of serenity and humor, blanketed Saint Mary-of-the-Woods this week. From Saint Mother Theodore Guerin appearing ready for a snowball fight (top right) to a snowman solemnly standing guard near frozen St. Joseph's Lake (bottom left), wonderful pictures abounded. (I couldn't pick just one.)

On Friday, Feb. 12, we will be celebrating the anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth! The Congregation’s children’s Web site, WoodsUp.com, is celebrating this special day!
Our 16th president is remembered as a great leader during a tumultuous time in our nation’s history. But before his days in Washington, D.C., Lincoln lived a few years in the Hoosier state. Lincoln, a fine storyteller, often shared memories of his life in Indiana. Some of these stories were about his education (or lack of formal education), a horse that kicked him, and a flatboat trip to New Orleans.

Sisters of Providence gather outside of Saint Joseph Chapel in Owens Hall prior to services for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on Feb. 2. This feast, celebrating when Simeon and Anna met Jesus in the temple, is also known as Candlemas Day or the Feast of Meeting.
After blessing their candles and welcoming "Christ as the true light which surrounds us," the sisters processed into the Chapel for daily Liturgy.

Being part of a community is important to Sister Carole Kimes. So it’s only natural that she would want Liza Hyatt, a Providence Candidate-Associate, to find people of similar values on her spiritual journey.
As a Providence Associate Companion, Sister Carole helps bring awareness to the role Providence plays in Liza’s life. And along the way, Sister Carole learns a lot about her own spiritual journey, herself and her God.
