Renovation of Providence Hall continued this morning with the removal of the clerestory from the roof of the Activity Room. Construction workers informed Sister Rose Ann Eaton, associate director of Facilities Management, that the clerestory would be removed at 8:30 a.m., and right on schedule the crane lifted it off the roof.According to some sisters gathered to view the spectacle, the clerestory at one time provided ventilation to those working in the hot, steamy kitchen. The service of the clerestory is no longer needed.

I admire the work of the Sisters of Providence, but I will have to say I'm disappointed to see this happen. I realize it no longer serves much of a practical purpose, but I'm a bit of an architectural purist and a historian at heart.
The committee and the General Council considered the cost and the clerestory was in bad need of repair. The boards on the side needed to be replaced, plus the windows. With all of that and our financial situation, we decided we couldn't afford it. It wasn't an easy decision and it wasn't taken lightly. It was a practical, economic decision at this point.
