Sisters of Providence respond to Oprah

The Sisters of Providence have issued a response to the Oprah Winfrey television program broadcast on Feb. 9, featuring the Dominican Sisters of Mary of Ann Arbor, Mich. The story focused on today's women who choose to have a life in a religious congregation. The letter has been sent to the Oprah Winfrey staff.

While the Dominican Sisters of Mary of Ann Arbor have a wonderful message to share, the Sisters of Providence feel the story of religious life as it was portrayed on Oprah is incomplete.

The story opened with Oprah stating that the show "called convents all across the country to see if they would let our cameras in. Most of them told us, 'no way.' One of them even asked, 'What is an Oprah Winfrey?'"

We think it's important to state that the Sisters of Providence have repeatedly invited Oprah and her show to the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods motherhouse with no response. The letter explains more.

Just so you know — we welcome visitors! When our gates are open (which is pretty much all of the time, except when we sleep), the public is welcome to visit our chapels, the Shrine of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin, our alpacas, the organic gardens, the Way of the Cross, the Gift Shop at Providence Center and everything we have to offer. Members of the media may contact Dave Cox, media relations manager, at 812-535-2810 or by e-mail at media@spsmw.org for exclusive tours and to arrange interviews.
